Playing on the Colorado Plateau

Been taking advantage of my 3 day weekends since they started, and lately been going to Glen Canyon to enjoy them while the temps are reasonable. The colorful cliffs north of Wahweap Bay have always piqued my interest so it was finally time to go see what was back there. I wanted to wander the canyons and cliffs south of the road leading out to Alstrom Point road, as well as a lower tributary of Warm Creek. Stopping along the Croton road at the heads of the various canyons a week prior I found they all start shallow, gradually cutting down thru sandstone to come to impassable falls sooner or later. And some are more scenic than others. But all are interesting and were absolutely worth the jaunts. One in particular had the bottom fall out in spectacular fashion so I wanted to bring canyoning gear to descend.

First I drove the Crosby Canyon Road to Warm Creek Bay and walked up to a side canyon on the east. Interested in this because from the rim the week before I had seen rolling slickrock benches and narrow constrictions and hoodoos. So time to go see. It did not disappoint. I wandered the slickrock and wash, checked out the hoodoos, and eventually reached a nice narrow pour over before bypassing it to the alcove and pour over above that terminated progress from below.

Then retracing steps to the truck and moving over to the Alstrom Point Road to camp.

Next morning I headed to Sile Brink Hollow to descend the slot and loop back up Pasture Point Canyon to exit. Some nice game panels above the slot.

And the slot was very nice, too short, and straight forward. With the added joyous surprise of some nasty quicksand, more appropriately quickmud, at the end. I got sucked in crotch deep in one fell step and was afraid for a moment I was trapped. But I crawled and cussed my way out no worse for the wear, but a few pounds heavier in clay.

Then a walk down to Warm Creek and up to Pasture Point Canyon (worth a trip of its own), where I exited just up from the mouth via rolling benches on the east to head over to Sile Brink Hollow's main (less interesting) fork.

Then back to the truck to once again camp along Alstrom Point Road.
