From planes to Blodgett

The very first time i climbed Blodgett, I climbed it during a little snow storm. So I decided to go and try this one in clear weather. Tember and I left the open space around 11am. We wanted to kill two birds with one stone and find the old plane wreck, summit, and back down the boulderfields. In order to do this we had to go off trail a little further than the boulderfields and trek up the northern side. This wasn't too bad once we got used to taking two steps up and sliding down one. We tried not to get too north because the snow from a week ago was still pretty deep, unfortunately most of the way up very steep, through the snow, and not to mention the massive rock ledges to climb around. We made a brief search for the WWII wreckage and had no luck(i need to find out more about the exact location of the plane). Then we continued up the rest of the way. Finally we made it to the summit, took pictures and headed down the crazy boulderfields.

Now i understand the gravel quarry!

The boulderfield has a few different sizes of rock, small, large, and huge(this must be why gravel is dug out of this range). The trip down is pretty scary, we sent a few small landslides tumbling down. Sometimes the largest boulders would give way and we'd "surf" down till they stopped. At one section I rode down on a slide of pea sized gravel and rocks...pretty scary. Not to mention my girlfriend, Tember, behind me sending rocks down at me! Every now and then I'd just hear her screaming "rock!" at me. Through a couple slips and some more rock dodges we made it to a semi solid forest and continued down twards where we assumed the trail to be.



Here's a tip- If you get to this point; stop, look for some orange ribbons and start heading twards them. You'll hit the trail in no time.

We made it back to the car. found no plane, but had an amazing trip. This mountain is not the biggest mountain in the Springs, but it sure will wear you out and the views are completely amazing. I would recomend this to anyone who wants to climb a tough little mountain with a very pleasing set of views and complete solitude. I do have to say this mountain is should not be underestimated, it can be very dangerous if you are not watching your step on any of the boulderfields. There are huge boulders that could easily take you out, pretty big cliffs back onto the boulderfield, and if you're with a buddy watch out for the other person's tumbling rocks. Most of all, have fun.
