Route Description
This route leaves from near the headquarters of Colonel Denning State Park and heads over two ridges to Flat Rock. With a summit elevation of 1,987 feet, this mountain gives you almost all of that elevation gain with 1,767 feet. It is done in five miles round-trip.
The first mile of the trail is the toughest. You'll gain about a thousand feet in a mile. The terrain is very steep and rocky. You'll head through thick laurel stands and past a very refreshing spring. Once you reach the top of the ridge you will start descending a little into a gully. This is where you'll pass the shelter along the Tuscarora Trail. The route is well marked with red blazes signs the whole way. Continue and climb again to the top of the second ridge and its summit. Flat Rock is just below here and affords wonderful views of the Cumberland Valley.
