Overview

The Fellhorn is an easy peak located at the border between Germany and Austria. Due to the presence of a cablecar to the summit, it is very popular both in summer and winter. The summit is part of the border ridge which can be hiked in both directions.

The view from both the summit and the cablecar middle station is absolutely gorgeous, and alone worth the visit!

This peak is also noted for its vegetation and sometimes called "the flower mountain of the Allgäu". The easy path between the Kanzelwand and the Fellhorn middle station has botanical information on the flowers encountered.

Getting There

The main city in the Allgäu Alps is Oberstdorf, and the trailhead can be reached from there either by car or public transportation. It is a few kilometres south, in the tiny town of Faistenoy.

See the Allgäu page for more information on how to get to Oberstdorf.

Red Tape

There are no restrictions on hiking, but, as in many other parts of the Allgäu, parts of the mountain are used for cattle grazing, so please be respectful and always close doors and fences back.

Hiking

There are three major routes to Fellhorn.

  • From Riezlern
Starting at the valley station of the Kanzelwandbahn a trail leads up the geological nature trail leads up to the top station (1949m). From there a trail follows the grassy ridge to Fellhorn starting at Gundsattel.

  • From Faistenoy
Starting at the valley station of the Fellhornbahn trail #443 leads up to the Kanzelwandhaus (1548m). From there you have several possibilites up to Gundsattel of directly up to the summit.

  • From Söllereck
A long ridge hike starting at the valley or top station of the Söllereckbahn. The trail leads all along the ridge up to Fellhorn with several minor peaks (Söllereck, Söllerkopf and Schlappoltkopf).

All trailheads are reachable from Oberstdorf by car or either the bus to Faistenoy or Baad (Kleinwalsertal).
