Route Description

From the starting point at Quehenberg follow the gently inclined pastures to the east. A few 100 m behind the farmhouse a small and steep valley has to be crossed at its base. During winter large avalanches rush down through this valley frequently. The avalanches break of from the steep south-east flank of Schober.
immediately behind this valley the track steepens. After another few 100m the pastures of the Gwechenberg Alm and soon the Gwechenberg hut (Austrian Alpine Club) are reached.
Behind the hut the summer route follows a small karstic valley (Lange Gasse) that runs to the Obere Alm, right below Grosser Traunstein. There you will join the route " Hochkarfelderkpf via Tagweide"
The winter route crosses the valley and runs directly to the west (some short but very steep ascends - only at secure conditions!) into a small cirque and than into a beautiful saddle between Sonntagskogel and Hochkarfelderkopf. From there a steep (in places 40-45 degrees) slope has to be climbed (danger of avalanches) that leads to the gentle East-ridge of Hochkarfelderkopf. a traverse from the East summit to the mauin summit in winter usually is not advisable.

Essential Gear

No special gear necessary. You will need the typical equipment for a high- Alpine hike but neither ropes nor crampons.
Best time is autumn, during summer weather might be very unstable and hot.
For skiing choose January to April. Read the daily avalanche report!
