Devils Racetrack

Overview

Located on the east side of the Interstate 75 about 25 miles south of the Tennessee, Kentucky line. These rocks are between the Jellico and Cove Lake exits on the highway. They rear up surprisingly vertical and are the most dramatic natural structures you will see on the highway between Miami of Ohio and Miami Florida. Looking like a less imposing version of Seneca Rocks they greet the northbound traveler as (s)he asecends the long ridge towards Jellico and the Kentucky line. The Southbound traveler on Interstate 75 will cross from Kentucky into Tennessee at Jellico. Right away one ascends Pine Mountain and travels along it until Pine Mountain intersects Cumberland Mountain at Tennessee mile marker 134 on I-75
The alert traveler will note a few other interesting crags on this ridge but they appear back in the "hollers". The name of this portal to the Jellico ridge is "Bruce Gap". Their most endearing feature is the possiblity of arranging a Tyrolean between two fins. Of course this activity causes a bit of rubber necking on a major U.S. artery. An interesting trail passes through Bruce Gap and the Devil's Racetrack called the Cumberland Trail. The area by the way is part of the Cumberland Plateau a coal bearing dissected plateau that is to the immediate west of the main Appalachian Crest. Of course they are not nearly as tall as the Smokies spine visible from the Knoxville area but Mts. Guyot, LeConte and Clingmans Dome while relatively lofty are less than precipitous.

How to Get there.

The Devil's Racetrack is 240 miles south of the Brent Spence Bridge spanning the Ohio at Cincinnati on interstate 75 and it is 30 miles north of Knoxville Tennessee on I 75.

Route

Just climb the scree hill up to the crag. The middle two fins are ready and waiting for your Tyrolean.

The Cove Lake visitor is served with 100 campsites. All sites are equipped with water and electrical hookups, and most with grills and tables. A dump station is available, as are two modern bathhouses containing hot showers, commodes, and lavatories. Campsites are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Stay limit is two weeks. Tents are allowed on all the campsites.
