Overview

Adamello and Presanella, during the World War I (Great War), were along the Italian and Austria - Hungarian border and represented, with the battles on Ortles - Cevedale group, the theater of so-called White War, in which Italian and Austria-Hungarian armies had to fight at great heights, even during the most snowy winters of 20th century. On the ridge Castellaccio - Lagoscuro - Cima Payer Italian Alpine Army built a fortified path to face Austria-Hungarian army stationed in Genova Valley. The via ferrata "Sentiero dei Fiori" runs along the old path of Italian troops and can be divided into two sectors: from Paradiso pass (m.2573) to Corno di Lagoscuro (m.3166) and from Cima Payer (m.3056) to Corno di Lagoscuro, here described as follows.

Getting There

Once reached the end of Genova Valley at Bedole hut (m.1641), follow the path n° 212 to Città di Trento al Mandron hut (m.2449) (2.30 hours). Then take a path behind the hut which leads along a steep final rocky slope to Payer pass (m.2978), where Cima Payer's south ridge and via ferrata begins (0.50 hours).

Route Description

Climb a vertical short wall, following the iron chain, reaching the edge of the exposed ridge which leads to the summit (m.3056). From here go down towards Lagoscuro Pass (m.2978), along the old military path with original wooden ladders. At the pass, the ruins of the old Italian military village are all around (1.45 hours). The summit of Corno di Lagoscuro (m.3166) can be reached with a 30 minutes hike from the pass. Come back to the pass, go down following a steep path among the rocks until the path n° 209 to Mandron hut (1.15 hours).
