Cala Fuili - Cala Luna

Approach

From Cala Gonone head southwards along the narrow coastal road. It ends at Cala Fuili where you can park your car at the side of the road. The little bay is often quite crowded (and so the parking place is limited). In addition to the hikers heading for Cala Luna there is a little beach and a great number of climbing routes which all draw a lot of people to the place.

After enjoying the views from Cala Fuili towards Cala Luna start the hike along the northern part of Sentiero Selvaggio Blu by heading down in the direction of the beach of Cala Fuili. Having reached the ground the trail turns upwards again steadily climbing to more than 200m of elevation. In the first part trees and undergrowth obstruct the views towards the sea but once you are on the top they open up towards all directions. On clear days you can see the Italian coastline in the far distance to the east.

Unfortunately the first half of the hike runs along some 1km inlands so that you don't have a view of the coast directly but once you get close to Cala Luna the emerald green sea looks breathtakingly beneath the (almost) white limestone rocks. You'll get to a viewpoint directly above Cala Luna where the trail turns inlands and enters the gorge Codula della Luna at its eastern end. Once on the gorge floor orientation gets a little tricky. There are quite a number of possible trails but only one leads to the bar and on to the beach. You have to climb over an improvised fence before you reach the bar building. From there on head through a lagune and up (yes up) to the beach. To the left are the "Grottoni" to the right the vertical Pietra di Luna.

Essential Gear

For this route hiking gear is sufficient. If you are thinking of climbing at Cala Luna of course bring your climbing gear. The routes are not very long (the longest one is less than 150m crisscrossing Pietra di Luna. Most climbers take the boat ferry anyway to haul their camping equipment as well.
