Overview
This is a unique ecological environment in the Mayacamas Mountains south of Clear Lake. The lake is a vernal pond about a half mile across when full. The bottom is a depression of packed volcanic sediment fed only by the surrounding terrain and supports rare flora and fauna in a seasonal setting that largely dries in summer. It's an easy walk about scene. There is a trail looping through the woods on the north side of the reserve. A main trail to the walk out deck a short distance from the start. You can also route find your way around the lake but obviously be careful of the environment.
The Reserve is 46 acres. It was established in 1973 and is co-owned by the The Nature Conservancy. It was designated as an ecological reserve by the Fish and Game Commission in 1998. Years of study by ecologists have made this place a model for providing needs for lands with ecological significance. The external links section expands considerably on the history, flora and fauna.
