Approach
From Brunico / Bruneck take SS621 in direction Ahrntal / Valle Aurina. At Sand in Taufers / Campo Tures turn right on SP48, direction Rein in Taufers / Riva di Tures. The ascent starts directly at Rein / Riva.

Arthur Hardeggen Trail in Bachertal / Val del Rio is a panoramic trail that completes a full circle along the slopes of the valley. Very impressive are the views of Rieserferner and Hochgall from the northern side of the valley but also the flat rock formations below Rieserferner which have been ground by the huge glacier not too long ago.
From Rein in Taufers / Riva di Tures start on the trail marked "1" (and Hochgallhütte first descending into the valley but soon climbing through a densely forrested area. This part of the trail offers no views as the trees are just too dense to allow seeing the northern mountains, like Rotstein and Bärenluegspitze. Soon you will clear the trees and approach Hochgallhütte, which is located beautifully on a plateau overlooking the valley.

From here, as stated on the main page - the ascents to Hochgall, Lenkstein, Schneebige Nock etc. starts. Stay on the trail (now denoted "8"). It now leads over a flattened plateau on which you can clearly and beautifully see the grindings of the Rieserferner glacier. Directly beneath Hochgall the trail turns north and now leads over a narrow ledge along the west face of Riesernock. Here the trail is moderately exposed winding through two gullys which, however, pose no serious problems.

Now down into Ursprungstal and over Bacherbach. Here you can follow trail 8B into Bachertal / Val del Rio or climb along 6A to Ursprunghütte. There the panoramic part of the trail begins leading you over meadows back to Rein / Riva. Enjoy the views of Hochgall and Rieserferner. At Kofler Alm the descent back to Rein starts winding down the meadows and entering the village from its northern side.
