Third in two days

After a trip to Washington state and fleeing some bad weather up there which kept me from getting Mt. Stuart, my wife and I made a trip to Elko Nevada with the sole purpose of bagging some peaks in that area. On the way to Elko, I picked up the Adobe Range highpoint, which was made easier thanks to Rayray's fine SP page for it. Then we spent the night in Elko and while my wife slept in the following morning, I made an early morning visit for the sunrise to the top of Elko Mountain, a drive up.

From Elko, we headed back to Wells Nevada and I went north once again following RayRay's fine directions to find the road that led to the next objective, Knoll Mountain. Knoll Mountain is relatively unknown and if it wasn't one of Nevada's prominence peaks with 2000 feet of prominence, it probably wouldn't be of much interest. As it was, there were only ten names in the register for a span that covered ten years. Besides Ray's name and that of his daughters, I only recognized two of the other visitors. Back to the story. Using his maps, we were able to find our way to near the top of the range and a place to park my truck. As it turned out, I parked at the wrong saddle and ended up adding some distance and elevation gain to the hiking effort but that wasn't really a problem since it would have been almost too easy of a hike otherwise. My wife waited at the truck while I made the five mile round tripper. I gained in the neighborhood of a thousand feet if you include the gains and losses. I found the hike to be pleasant and the views huge. So much of this part of Nevada is wide open from this summit and it was nice to find a fair amount of green in August. The remainder of this trip report will be told via my pictures.

Ray's page was a great resource and I can't tell you how much I appreciated the effort he made to put the information out there. His maps and access pics were invaluable. He has many pics up that mine are similar to so I would refer you to his cover page for some of the view pics. Dan Robbins (Idahosummits) just did this hike in the wintertime and wrote a trip report HERE.
