Re: Is it legal

You have the possibility to stay at the Berghotel Schwarenbach, near to Balmhorn and Altels.
Its not really legal to build the tent there, until you do an emergency bivy. We built out tent at a place where people have been before, out of sight and we left the place clean, so i think its tolerated.
On the route to the Zackengrat there are several places where you can bivy and place a tent, also on the Zackengrat behind a small stone wall.

Re: Is it legal

I saw photos of at least 4 different climbers, who had a bivy at your bivy place or close to it. So I guess it is a tolerated bivy site, because if I find on the web, local rangers must know for sure. Unless it was tolerated, someone would have warned others. OK, if I go there, I will leave no garbage there. Thanks for advice! Do you think it is better to ascend Zackengrat for a glacier beginner or ascend Altels via normal route (rock on Altels looks of much worse quality than rocks on the Zackengrat)? How about final part of Altels ascend? There is a short, but very airy ridge from fore-summit on Altels. Will it be more dangerous than Zackengrat at the end of june? We will go there last days of june. How much snow are we to expect up there? What about avalanche danger? Thanks for advices, Greets, Tomas :)

Re: Is it legal

I think, its tolerated as long as theres no waste, the people are not disturbed and if the people behave in a responsible way.
The schwarzglacier under the Zackengrat is very easy to cross, follow the way at the left side, and when you have to cross the glacier you will see very good the big crevasses, its an easy glacier ( the rest of it) the Zackengrat is also not very dificult, what knocked us down last time was the wind.
Be careful of rockfall when you walk up from the glacier to the Zackengrat.
I can not give you more helpful advices, but contact Digitalis, he knows the Balmhorn and Altels good and he might be a better help for you than I am.
Greets and a hope for your success, Thomas

Re: Is it legal

I wrote to Digitalis, I'll see. He didn't respond until now. If I do not have sufficient info, I will only go for Schwarzhorn (Grindelwald). I'm going with my girlfriend and safety must be assured. Cheers Tomas :)

Re: Is it legal

i understand, well i can recommend you the Zackengrat route as a long but not dangerous or difficult route, you should have to be fast and start early, and hope for not too much wind. Tha way on the Zackengrat ridge is wide enough to walk safe.
Cheers, Thomas
