Slog Down Low, Consolidation Up High  Sucess!

It seemed to be a popular week to do this peak and County Highpoint. The register was signed by two people one week before my visit, as well as by Andy Boos from two days prior to my visit. The snow started shortly before Copper Creek Pass. I got to the pass within one hour, but it was a long, steep slog from that point on... several areas of snowmelt and wetness were quite dangerous to traverse, especially near the rock arete mentioned by Klenke, and I had to reroute my descent. The snow on the summit ridge was awesome! Perfect for traversing, glissading, and whatever else I could put my mind to doing. I liked seeing some of the famous peakbagger names in the summit register canister.
Not the easiest or safest WA CoHP, but it had some of the best views of those I have visited thus far. My 17th WA CoHP.

A great day  Sucess!

A perfect day for a hike/climb made the detour from Montesano all the way around to Donkey Creek Road north of Humptulips worth it. Up in 3 hours and back down in under 1 1/2 hours. No route finding problems due to finding a series of game trails all the way to the upper meadows.

Third time was the charm  Sucess!

I had tried unsuccessfully twice before finally bagging this one - not enough time the first time, and nasty weather the second time. On my third attempt I brought reinforcements, Dean and Duane. With lots of snow on the upper slopes and with a dry though gray day, the conditions couldn't have been better. We first summitted Point 4949 just inside Mason County, then headed down the ridge for the Grays Harbor COHP. After looking around for a bit Dean spotted a cairn and register that had been left by Bob Packard.

Gray topping  Sucess!

Used the route from the end of the spur instead of from Copper Creek Pass. This way may be a little less steep but there is still plenty of zigzagging to avoid outcroppings.

Snow effort  Sucess!

Sp'ers Bob, Duane and I hit the perfect snow conditions to do both Wynoochee Pt. and the Gray's Harbor cohp. Ice axe and crampons recommended. I'd recommend trying to time this one with good snow conditions if you can. An interesting area that few people probably visit. Nearby Capitol Peak may see some traffic but unless you are into county highpointing, there wouldn't be much of a reason to visit this particular area.
