So much for global warming....

12/27/08 The total snow so far has been 47" over 10 days. The normal snow amount for December is 19". The forecast is snow every day for the next week. However, today and tomorrow we will also get rain. UGH!

12/28/08: It got warm and rained so some melting occurred.

12/29/08 AM Now it is cold again. We are at 51" and up to 5 more expected today. It is DUMPING out there.

12/29/08 - evening: We didn't get 5"- we got 11"! Total since 12/17 is 62 inches. Next storm is due tomorrow evening. This is about 20" above the normal ANNUAL snow amount. This is the most it has snowed in a month here since records have been kept. The next storm is on its way. Oh, joy.
All stores which normally have such things are out of snow shovels, roof rakes and snowblowers. The hottest item for thieves currently are snow shovels!!

1/1/09: Happy New Year!We got about 2 more inches, then it turned warm. More snow due tomorrow. Saturday it is supposed to turn really cold: like 0. All the passes in the state are closed due to avalanches.

1/2/09 Surprise. It snowed - about 3 inches. Gotta shovel before I go to work.... Roofs are collapsing all over town

1/3/09 Yesterday it was 34 degrees. This morning it is -2. It's a Popsicle out there. Bastards plowed us in last night - I have a 2 foot berm to shovel this morning (Fred has a tweaked out back).

LATER: well, that took 2 hours to do! It at least partially offsets all the extra holiday calories I ate and drank!

1/5/09 We got another 6" with about 2" more to come today. It is supposed to turn into rain later this week. Gotta go shovel again...
Later: we are officially at 79" of snow, 77 of it within the last 19 days. 46" is the norm and we still have at least 3 months to go. I think 93" is the record. It is supposed to get warm and rain about 1.5" in the next 2 days (this would be like getting 15" more snow...). Anyone have a spare ark?

1/6/09 Well, surprise - it snowed some more. Looks like about 2"

1/7/09 Now it's over 40 degrees but no rain (yet). Things are absolutely gross and sloppy. Today they had the shovel the snow off the roof of the building I work in. My neighbor's patio roof is gone...

1/12/09 Luckily it did not rain anything as predicted. so the meltdown has progressed fairly sedately. However, snow berms still clog roadways and sidewalks. We are supposed to have a few days of respite from snow.
However, we are under an inversion, common for this area. Days of very dense fog, dreariness and freezing drizzle. Anyone with SAD will really be suffering!

At one point these past days, EVERY pass between us and Seattle was closed and I-5 between Seattle and Portland was closed, some stores, including grocery stores, were running short.

At this point, our official snow total in Spokane is 80.2 inches - about double what we usually get in a whole winter and we are only half way through.

2/12/09 So it's been a month since the big dump - we've only gotten an inch or so since, but more snow is in the forecast. We've had some warm days, so much snow has melted but there's well over a foot in our yard. Many streets are still narrowed by big snow berms, which aren't going anywhere soon.

3/12/09 We got about 2" of snow this week and it turned very cold - just to make sure we all realize winter isn't quite done yet. Our official total is about 88" which is 5.5 off the all time record of 93.5". It seems doubtful we'll break that record, although snow and rain are in the forecast for the entire week, but it's still double what we usually see here in a winter. That makes 2 winters back to back that were COLDER and snowier than usual. I read one report that if the sunspot lull continues and the cold water area in the Pacific persists through this summer, next winter could also be a good one.

4/2/09 Woke up to 3 inches of new snow. That plus the 3 inches we got the other day put us well over the all time record. More snow is in the forecast....

4/6/09 I think (hope?) that we are done with snow for the season. Final total is 97.7". The back to back 2 winter total is also a record breaker - something like 190+ inches. The weather pundits say that the cooler than usual Pacific Ocean temps plus the lack of sun spot activity portends a third snowy winter. Bring it on!!!

4/14/09 Okay - I was wrong. We woke up to another couple of inches of snow. This storm was weird - not enough fell at the airport to add to the official total, but parts of northern Spokane got as much as 12inches!

Snow dump

Moni,
One of my best friends lives in NW Spokane and he's been sending me pics of this too. Crazy snow! He had his wife belay him up on the roof yesterday so he could safely shovel it off before the next storm comes (and I guess there are two storms lining up to hit you again). Good luck!

Re: Snow dump

He must live nearby - since we live in north central/NW area. Unless he has a flat roof, the building codes here indicate that we could easily hold twice as much snow as we've gotten. Hopefully that won;t happen. We are to get another foot by Monday. Who needs to work out - we just shovel. :-)

Gotta love it

Moni, I really enjoyed this album. I'm from Southern Nevada but I spent December 21st thru January 1st in St Maries, Idaho (about an hour away from Spokane). I shoveled lots of snow but bagged four peaks using x-country skis and or snowshoes while I was there. Beautiful area (summer or winter)!

Re: Gotta love it

Thanks for the compliment. That you climbed anyway is great, but given that during that time avalanche conditions were the worst they'd been in years, you either picked reasonable goals or were very lucky! It hasn't snowed in a while - but the weather is looking promising for the week. The old snow is still about a foot deep in our yard and I doubt will melt any time soon.

Ski to school

I go to school at Whitworth, we had a kid ski to class in January.

About as much snow as we get in Sisters, OR.
