Winter is bestI really prefer the winter shots as they give this mountain some personality. I do look forward to the "flower" gardens that will appear in the spring though and will cart my camera up for some that good stuff. Must have a great view of Mt. Hood from there.

Re: Winter is bestWell, actually, this picture is of Dog's next door neighbor, Wind Mountain. I threw this one in as an addition to the hike on Dog for an option. Never had good views towards Hood from Wind so I couldn't tell you about it. I have seen Hood from Dog Mountain though but from what I remember, the view was only of the tip of it. The other side of the Gorge is a bit higher with Mt. Defiance in the way so you only catch the top of it.
Now, if you want a great view of the north side of Hood, hiking up Mt. Defiance is the way to go! Great views of 4 big volcanoes from there.

Bolted slabs?Thought I read in Portland Rock book that there are some low 5th class bolted slab climbs somewhere on Wind Mountain.
Brian..... you know anything about this?

Re: Bolted slabs?Sorry so tardy in the reply, been out of the country (hey, first time I've ever gotten to use that excuse). I just looked in my Portland Rock book and it has the following:
Windy Slab: Located along State Route 14 at the base of the south side of Wind Mountain. Windy Slab is a low abgle 40' slab with half a dozen TR. The rock is reminiscent to granite friction climbing and routes range from 5.4 to 5.10C. Park in the gravel pullout west of the "Keep Skamania County Clean" sign. Windy Slab is highly worth the casual passing through visit.
I had never heard of this before, Cluck. I know there is supposed to be a trad route up the rock on the SE side of Dog that looks interesting but never had read about Wind before. Thanks for pointing this out.

Re: Bolted slabs?I hiked up the side of Dog you are talking about 2 weekends ago to scope out the approach to the rocky ridge and the "Dog's Tooth". Steep ass scree and the rock quality on the ridge looked horrible. I still may try to get up Dog this way sometime, but only with a partner, rock, pro, pins, helmet and lots of bail webbing for raps.
After, went to main trail and hiked fast up (1:05) and round trip in (1:50). Nothing like a trail to make you feel fit even if you aren't. 2,500' of vertical per hour here does not equal 2,500' on a climb.

That's an excellent pace on Dog I think. Would kick my butt.
Hey if you ever need a partner for that route on Dog, I'd be game. The book also says it's rotten rock though.
The guide I used on the one climb in Iceland pushed us up over 5500 feet in about 4 hours on heavily crevassed glacier before we had to retreat due to weather. Kicked my butt. I think we had maybe 15 minutes of rest time the entire time. Ugh.

Re: Bolted slabs?Yeah, there were many unbelievably beautiful women there. Unfortunately for me, they are all about 6 foot tall (I'm 5'8") and of model quality while I was hiking/climbing most every day and had some quality odor on me so not too many looking my way. Plus, there are just as many 6'5" blonde guys for competition. It wasn't the Shangri La I was hoping for. Plus, the whole country has a population of like 100,000 and there were just as many average ones and unattractive ones so the odds are actually better here in the good ol US, I think.
But yeah there were some amazingly hot ones there, man.
