Whitebark Pines, #2.

Whitebark Pines, #2.

These whitebark pines were killed by blister rust. The bleached, twisted remains are really quite wonderful! Photo by Vernon, June 23, 2008.

Whitebark Pine?

White Pine or Whitebark pine? I thought White Pine would mean Pinus Monticola which is bigger, straighter and closely resembles Pinus Strobus ( all three are subject to rust)

Re: Whitebark Pine?

Thanks for the input - You may well be correct; I did the naming from memory of my conversation with the park ranger met on the trail. Anyway, I'll do a little research, then make the correction....

Thanks again!

Re: Whitebark Pine?

Conversation with someone who has a degree in this sort of thing lets me know that the original label of "White Pine" was incorrect. The correct species is either "Whitebark Pine," or "Limber Pine"—which are almost indistinguishable from each other. I'll go with Whitebark Pine. Thanks again for pointing this out....
