Where is everybody  Sucess!

What a beautiful place. Not a soul in sight. Night sky was one of the best I’ve ever seen

Wheeler Summit  Sucess!

Great Basin National Park is a gem, and Wheeler Peak is a fun way to spend some time there. Sometimes I wish it was 100ft taller so it could hold the NV high point title, it's a great mountain

2nd time on Wheeler  Sucess!

A windy but clear day on top of Wheeler. Temps in low 50s, but great hike.

Fun Open climb and big mountain feel in a smaller range.   Sucess!

Visiting the Great Basin National Park with my family and parents. My Dad and I stole away for half a day to hike this peak. Beautiful place with big mountain feel. Plenty of snow on top and great expansive views. Dramatic cliffs and lakes with a rocky mountain feel. I plan to go back and climb more peaks.

Colin  Sucess!

My wife and I summited on a regrettably hazy day. Smoke from the California fires was so thick we could barely make out the neighboring mountains by the time we were headed down. Left from the Wheeler campground parking lot around 8:30. Got back down around 3:00. Not bad for a couple in their mid-60's.

Early start made for excellent day despite some loose rock above tree line  Sucess!

Will do trip report soon, but here's a snapshot. I got started at 05:15 this morning after car camping at trailhead. The wildfire haze luckily didn't obscure immaculate early morning views of the summit and its high neighbor Jeff Davis Peak, as I approached from below. I got short of breath during the final 300 vertical meters or so, which was presumably due to lack of sleep and the altitude, but more the altitude of course. I was first on the summit, and then one person, then another, then another arrived. On way down droves of people, maybe 50 total, were still ascending or beginning to ascend.
The most challenging aspect of the hike was traversing over practically granulated rock from the foot traffic within those, I'd say, final 300 vertical meters. On the way down I either mildly or nearly hyperextended a knee as some of these "soft" patches of rocky trail gave way beneath my weight. Total time for round trip including some stops to chat was just less than 6 hours.
I'd personally recommend starting early during the height of the summer, for it was pleasantly cool the entire way up. By the time I returned to the car it was hot as the sun rode high.

Tough climb  Sucess!

The summit of Wheeler Peak affords grand views, but getting there is tough. The final 1,000' consists of rocks and small boulders that test your knees on the way up and torture them on the way down. It took longer than I expected to reach the top and even longer to descend. I'm glad I did this but even happier to cross it off the bucket list. Much prefer Wheeler Peak in New Mexico (both peaks are named after U.S. Army officer George Wheeler, who conducted geologic surveys in the West in the late 1800s.)

Windy hike in September  Sucess!

Penelope and I were attending the Great Basin Astronomical Show at the Great Basin NP so decided to hike up the peak. It seems the winds on the peak are often very strong, we experienced one of those days. But the hike was great. The whole GBNP experience was wonderful and the night sky an incredible sight.

Wheeler Duathalon  Sucess!

Biked to the trailhead from Baker, then did the standard trail. Been eyeing this peak for years, happy to finally bag it, although it was a smokey day. Awesome ride down!

Tough from Baker Lake  Sucess!

Zero trail from Baker Lake, in fact very few signs others have been here, though many have. I bagged both Baker Peaks on the way up, then slogged over the ridge to Wheeler, then back down to the lake. GPS tracks

Smoky from the California fires  Sucess!

Not a great strategy to climb the day before my first mountain bike race, but YOLO

Made it  Sucess!

It was a smoky day so the views weren’t as good as they probably usually are, but it was still worth the hike. I love the huge rock shelters at the top.

Better than expected  Sucess!

I have always wanted to climb this one and this summer I was able to put together a last minute trip to the area and climb this. Not going to lie it was not very difficult. for sure the Easiest 13ner I have ever climbed. The views were insane and The hike up is amazing staring at the massive cliffs. Stopped at the lake on the way down and that for sure is worth it. Great Basin is small and Isolated but is still a really cool National Park.

New Personal High Point  Sucess!

My highest summit so far. Nice to have a road to 10,161 ft. Great day but wind very strong. Another hiker suggested that the ranch to the west of Wheeler, should be named Pac Man Ranch.

Carried Journey Up for my birthday!  Sucess!

https://www.strava.com/activities/1077323941
Had a great family outing. Journey turned a bit blue on the summit after a while, so I ran down pretty quick with her on my back until she started acting normal again. Probably being paranoid, but erred on being cautious.
