The trail to the peak of Wetterhorn has been change. Last year, the Colorado Fourteener's Initiative spent the entire summer creating a new sustainable trail to the top. When entering from the Matterhorn Creek Basin, you will see signs directing you to where the trail begins. It's an awesome trail, everybody should try it some time :-)

climbing wetterhorn

Wetterhorn Peak (Colorado), do you need ropes and helmets to climb this one, or is it just scrambling? About how many nights and days does it take to climb?
Thank you,
Wiktoria

Re: climbing wetterhorn

Wetterhorn is rated Class 3, which means it can be scrambled safely without ropes as long as the climber is confident and does not mind serious heights. Most folks climb the mountain without ropes because it would be hard to place protection on the route anyway, and there's plenty of holds and wide ledges to work with. Most people climb Wetterhorn in one day as a day hike, but camping in the area makes the experience very special because Wetterhorn is in a beautiful area. I've done it both ways a number of times and either way is great. I've climbed Wrtterhorn ten times and it's one of my favorite mountains. It's great fun and it has an awesome view. Let me know how it goes if you climb the mountain, and good luck in your mountain climbing endeavors!
