Not that bad  Sucess!

From the lake, this looked like it'd be a bit sketchy, but there was a use trail that stayed on the backside and this was not very bad at all. Looking at the pics, I may not have made the highest point, but I got the USGS summit marker, so I guess it's official.

Amazing Hike !

We used the Pine Creek Trailhead on the west side of the mountain (7 hours round trip and maybe 14 miles with our off trail exploring). We took a leisurly hike and explored all the lakes on the way up. When we got to the saddle, we could have summited or visited Patterson Lake. With our time constraints we chose the lake. It was so beautiful. I'll come back next October hopefully for the summit.

From Pepperdine  Sucess!

Great hike out of Pepperdine TH, on the very scenic Summit trail. Patterson Lake was fantastic, set against the wall of Warren Peak. A trail goes all the way to the saddle where a cairn marks the start of the cross country route. The peak gets climbed enough so footprints are typically visible and routefinding is not too difficult, just stay left of the ridge for the most part. Once you get to the summit pinnacle you can continue west another 100 feet or so to get to easier terrain to head up a largely class 2 with bits of class 3. Wonderful views from the summit. Retraced steps back down, tagging WSC listed Squaw Peak on descent.

ahead of the storm  Sucess!

Nice day hike from Pepperdine to the summit. Just beat a thunderstorm that chased me down to Patterson Lake. Got around an inch of rain that evening at our Pepperdine camp. Neat mountain and cool setting above a great lake.

First to sign the register in 8 months!  Sucess!

I was surprised to find that many people sign the summit register each season, but due to the lingering deep snowpack, I was the first since November 4th, 2010. I got a late start around 1:30 p.m., after playing around with my kids on a pleasant day in the Warners. The wildflower display was outstanding on the way to Squaw Peak. There was a lot of snow to deal with after reaching the Squaw Peak area, and 3-6 feet of snow from Cottonwood Lake onward (with deeper banks to avoid or walk on up higher), but it just added to the adventure. I decided to make a loop by hiking up the ridge between Cottonwood and Patterson Lakes to get to Warren Peak and then hike down to Patterson Lake by heading down the southeast ridge of Warren Peak. I made it back to camp at Pepperdine an hour after dark with several mosquito bites to show my family...it didn't appear in looking at Alturas after sunset, that it had a firework show on the 4th.
