The sandy, flat saddle...

The sandy, flat saddle between Starr King's Middle and South summits contains many excellent campsites. There is ample deadwood nearby and a little fire pit. We camped there on the night of August 2, 2002, and climbed Starr King the following morning. The steep approach to the base of the climb over the middle summit is most comfortably done with rock shoes.

Water

Morgan, I'm thinking about camping there this weekend. Is there water nearby, or should I plan to bring it? Thanks!

Re: Water

Hi David,

Sorry for the long delay. DIdn't see a summit log entry, so maybe you haven't climbed it. We did it in August of a normal-to-dry snow year, and there was absolutely no water above Illouette Creek. Had to haul it up, and ended up running out. I would guess that in June, you'd have some residual snow at least somewhere in the vicinity, probably on the other (northeast) side of the saddle. Otherwise, there will probably be some running water into July on the slopes of the mountain, but I don't really know. Great campsite, but the lack of water definitely was a negative for us.

Re: Water

Thanks Morgan. Yeah, I actually ended up scratching my Starr King plans, but a friend is heading up there in a week and a half so I'll pass along your beta.
