Wow, wonderful picture!Are those ski marks or rope marks at the bottom of the picture leading to the figure? thx

Those are rope marks. I don't know of any ski descents of that pass, although people ski stuff that I find astounding. But there is a very steep and rocky drop off to left side of the photo. Though not steep the climbing was thin fresh snow covering glacial ice. The top of the pass is seen here if you are interested.

That is a big-ass glacier...I can only imagine how deep those crevasses must be! Great shot.

Re: That is a big-ass glacier...Thanks. Actually, that is a small-ass glacier by Himalayan standards! Nonetheless I was suitably impressed and exhilierated by being in that spot. I've crossed this pass twice and both times were among my favorite days. The weather cooperated, also.
I have a 1952 book, The Mount Everest Reconnaissance Expedition by Eric Shipton, with a photo taken near this spot. The layers visible in the ice here are strikingly similar in that photo. Shipton and Ed Hillary were among the first to explore this region.
