Lost Arrow Tip - Camp

Lost Arrow Tip - Camp

Shirley relaxing in our humble camp near the top of Upper Yosemite Falls after our climb of the Lost Arrow Tip - and anticipating the pain in the a** hike down the endless switchbacks.... This is a great campsite in a shallow, flat depression atop slabs (invisible from trail) - close to water and under the open skies (June 6, 2004).

Aid Or Free?

I'm assuming you guys aided the Tip. Pretty burly second pitch to the top (.10d/11a). Unless you can free at that level...I could assume incorrectly.

Re: Aid Or Free?

Good assumption Dave. Yeah, as I said before, it'll be several lifetimes before I can lead (or even follow) at that level. I thought the top pitch goes free at .12b (supertopo)? I also aided thru. the 1st pitch OW (5.9-5.10) and pretty much the whole climb. Given the setting, it was still a pretty unforgettable experience.

Re: Aid Or Free?

No less than Jerry Moffat had to make several (seconding) attempts at one of these moves with Kauk leading, all on national TV. The view from the far side of the pond was that it was a set up by Kauk-I thought that TV seldom gets to this level.

Re: Aid Or Free?

Radek, I think you are being too modest about your climbing ability. I totally understand when a climber decides to aid through a section for speed and safety than taking chances
on freeing a pitch. That doesn't mean he can not free the pitch.
A fantastic TR, love it.

Re: Aid Or Free?

Marc - thank you very much for your modesty comment :) ....but really, the universe would have to wait a couple of lifetimes before I could free the whole thing :)
Cheers Marc!
