TOPO! map of standard PCT winter approach to the western approach to Round Top. Notice that the trail is followed for a little while, but then contours through the trees. At around 8700', the trail breaks out of the trees to the west of Elephants Back. From here, climb the gentle ridge south toward Round Top, then descend to the lowpoint where the creek drains Winnemucca Lake.
