A strange light effect that occurred when a first cloud started to build. Half an hour later the sky was densely covered. September 2000

Irridescent clouds

Hey great picture of a fairly uncommon atmospheric phenomenon!

It's called irridescent clouds and is a symptom of small, uniform water droplets in the upper atmosphere. See this link for another nice picture and some better descriptions of the science.

Re: Irridescent clouds

Thanks Charles, really interesting. The weird thing, however, was that this tiny little wannabe of a cloud turned into a fully covered sky only an hour later! Perfect weather up till then.

And it's a pity that you never catch the real beauty on a picture. Plus by scanning you again lose some quality (I only have the paper prints :-().

Too bad
