This is as close to the route...

This is as close to the route that I can remember. The red section is probably the most dangerous part of the climb. This gully is poised with teetering blocks and is extremely loose. I recommend only one at a time.

Just curious, but the quality of this rock looks hideous. Why would you want to scramble on something this loose?

Martin, you bring up a good point. Yes the Bells are loose. My objective in my route description was to keep inexperienced hikers and climbers off the mountain by using strong and to the point verbage concerning this matter. The Maroon Bells are so popular that you have to take a bus to the TH. A lot of those tourists decide to give these mountains their best shot. To me this is the only scary aspect of climbing this mountain. I absolutely loved this mountain, the route finding was really fun. The scenery was some of the best in Colorado. My objective the entire climb was to be as focused as possible not to dislodge any rock. I truely don't have any memory of acccidently sending rockfall. Its a matter of being smart.



I know this sounds silly but they are the Maroon Bells-you can't go anywhere in Colorado without seeing a photo of these mountains hanging on the wall.

You might try looking under the “Camping” section on the Thunder Pyramid page. Lincoln Creek is free, although it is on the other side of Aspen. I am not aware of any free (and legal) campsites near the Maroon Bells trailhead.

There is no free camping in the Maroon Creek Drainage. In fact, there is no camping in there without a reservation.
