Do you use a polarizer for shots like this? (or something else) I'm only using basic and cheap camera stuff, and typically a photo like this would have a white-out on the snow.

Yes Rick, I use polarizer, when conditions are right for it. You can put it in front of your camera too or any camera but you and your camera must know what to do with it. Just putting polarizer on doesn't guarantee good results, especially with cheap cameras that doesn’t give you any control. But sometimes even cheap cameras can surprise you. But pure Auto mode is easily tricked by polarizer so it is best if you have good camera and control white balance, aperture and contrast manually.
