startling...South Ridge route seems a lot steeper when your slogging up the last half mile through the scree, I didnt realize the incline there was so gentle.

It IS steep ...I've climbed that route too, and I think this shot doesn't really convey how steep it is. I took a shot of the slope against the horizon, and it was a 35-40 degree slope, particularly the upper mountain. Volcanic peaks tend to be gradually steeper as you approach the summit.
