Re: North Peak Couloir

Is that the far left couloir? Looks like the one Chief and I did in '07. Beautiful!

Re: North Peak Couloir

This is the main couloir. It's is longer and steeper than the one on the far left, and it has a bergschrund.

Re: North Peak Couloir

I used to carry a slope gauge everywhere I went. I would take multiple measurements every time I climbed a couloir. It's amazing how much people overestimate the steepness of climbs. The couloir on the far left is only 40-42 degrees. The main one with the bergschrund is 45-46 degrees.

Superb!

This is a spectacular photo Bob. Well beyond my comfort zone! Nice to be able to get an image like this. Did a friend take it? (You in the photo?) Very nicely done.

Re: Superb!

Thank you. Yes, my buddy, Ed, took that photo of me. He and his wife had run a marathon a few days earlier, and they just weren't up for the climb. The photo makes it look much steeper than it is. It's a fairly constant 45-46 degrees from the bergschrund to the top. It's pretty mellow when it's snow. When it's ice, you need good technique, and you must focus and not make any mistakes. However, it isn't nearly as hard as it looks. I've done it 19 times, almost all solo.
