UN 9413

Overview

This peak is probably often overlooked by passers-by setting their sights on Cookstove or Mount Rosa. However, it offers a great workout in a shorter time, a fun Class 3 scramble to the top and great 360 views.

Getting There

Take US Highway 24 West, also known as Cimarron Street, to 8th Street. Go south on 8th Street. Turn right on Cheyenne Boulevard. Continue staight at Cresta Road. When you come to a fork in the road, take the right fork, which is North Cheyenne Canyon Road. The left fork goes to Seven Falls. Follow the road past Helen Hunt Falls and continue up switchbacks until you reach the end of the paved roadway. There is a large gravel parking lot on the left. Park here.

Route

Park at the intersection of the closed Gold Camp Road and High Drive, and start hiking up the closed portion of Gold Camp up to the tunnel. The trail continues up over the top of the collapsed tunnel, and there is a sign for a hiking trail here that heads south towards St Marys Falls. Initially this trail is nice and level walking near a stream, and it gradually picks up to get to the base of the falls. At this point, there will be a sign saying take a left to the base or right to the top of the falls. Take a right and go up a series of switchbacks.

The switchbacks take you above the falls. After a good climb along the switchbacks, you'll come to a saddle and see Cookstove mountain on your left. The trail will start to head south and west towards Mt Rosa, it's at this point that you want to head north and slightly east along the saddle. You'll see a good bit of quartz laying around. 9413 has an exposed rock ridge that forms its summit, you'll want to scramble up from the west side and follow it north and a bit east to gain the summit. As long as you pick your route well, moves are all Class 3 without exposure to speak of.

Red Tape

No permits or fees are required. Dogs should be leashed as this is a City Park. Be sure to observe park hours which are posted as you enter the park. A large portion of the route and UN 9413 itself is in Pike National Forest.

When to Climb

UN 9413 should be climbable in all seasons, winter could require gaiters/microspikes and a good bit of caution on the scramble.

Camping

No camping is allowed in North Cheyenne Canon Park. Camping is allowed in Pike National Forest. Be sure to follow National Forest camping guidelines.
