Mount Hood Storm

Hey Everyone,

My buddy and I climbed the South side on June 8-9. Climbing conditions were good until.....

We ended up staying in the tent at 9,050' for 26 hours during the storm that rocked the NW that weekend. It was the same storm that killed 1 and injured 2 on Rainier. Winds reached 91 miles per hour (NOAA) and visibility was less than 10 feet at our camp site on the TM. Rescue was not an option as reported on Rainier.

Be careful and be prepared for the worst. Bring a shovel to dig out a platform at the TM. Take the time to build a snow wall on the most likely windward side at least. If you don't need it great. If you do it could save your life. Our tent compressed to 12" (center) at times and the fly on the windward side tore even with snow wall protection.

I was able to get 1 bar on my Verizon phone for most of the storm. My Garmin GPS got us back down. We roped up and down climbed for an hour before visually being able to seeing the top of the Palmer lift.

Sorry I don't have any storm pictures to post. The couple I took on my phone didn't show much other than a white colored screen.

Have fun and be safe!
