I scrambled up Mt Wood last summer; it was a grueling hike into an impressive Montana wilderness.

I approached from the north, via the Stillwater Plateau. Camped on the plateau and started early the next day. It became pretty damn dangerous trying to go up the northwest ridge directly, but my luck improved when I bailed out to the south and went up the west side which was full of crumbly rock, yet not as horribly steep or broken as the NW ridge. Check out the "links" section for a more detailed description.

There are actually two summits to Mt Wood. The west summit has the 12649 spot elevation but the east summit(the elongated contour 1/3 mile east of the spot el.) appears just as high or higher in the field. ONnthe east summit I found a tiny register in a perscription bottle, with one signee each of the last 3 years. The 2000 entry mentioned that by use of makeshift transit, this(the east) summit was higher, which confirmed my suspicions, though I didn't have a level to provide conclusive proof. I located a couple cairns but couldn't find a register on the west summit.
