Big Gay Al(The Mountain Guide), Uber Grandma, Sphincter-Boy, and myself, set out to climb Mt. Shasta the weekend of 13-15 May, 2005. Shasta has had A LOT OF SNOW this Spring and consequently, our approach into Hidden Valley left us getting in late and exhausted into camp on Friday evening.
We decided to go for Shastina on Saturday instead. We left camp about 8 am and summited about 2:30 pm. We practically snow-shoed all the way to the top! Snow conditions can best be described as "mashed potatoes".
Glissading on the way back down was a "hit or miss" operation........ Snow was just too soft.
We had amazing weather all day on 14MAY, Saturday. Sunshine and blue skies on the summit, with a few clouds on the way back down.
Kudos to Big Gay Al (The Mountain Guide)...........his name has been changed to protect his guilt! He is affiliated with Shasta Mountain Guides, that much I can reveal. SMG is a class act, and if you are a "newbie" like myself, I highly recommend them!
I have never eaten so good in the backcountry!
One other note...............don't waste your time going up Avalanche Gulch. Hidden Valley is one the most beautiful places I've ever been to!!!!! Right up there with the "Cirque of the Towers" in the Wind River Range. From there, you can attempt Shasta up the West Face or Shastina up Cascade Gulch. You will also have about 150 fewer climbers alongside you!
CLIMB ON !!!!!!!!
