This a view of the South side of the mountain in late August. I
have added it simply to illustrate why climbing is better earlier
in the year.

Because it is there. I've done it 5 times and the whole trip takes 12 hours - home-summit-home. Seriously, if you live in the Portland area, it is a great way to climb and get home to the family all in one day... - Noah

Normal?

Is that the normal snowpack for this time of year? I would think that is a lot more melted out than usual...

Sadly this is what we have had recently. I know that in the "olden days" the mountain never melted out so completely. I have pictures of what looks like a totally different mountain from 100 years ago. People who don't think burning billions of gallons of fuel, tons coal and barrels oil each year doesn't create heat are living life far from glaciers... - Noah

Looks like South Sister for god sakes

Great photo but it's really really depressing! I've never seen Hood look like this before. We had such a low snow-year, scary to think that one day there won't be any glaciers in Oregon. Too bad nobody's really made an affordable hybrid car that works on the roads climbers drive on. So Sad.

Not to get off topic, but if you are interested, Toyota is supposed to be dropping a hybrid into the Tacoma and 4Runner in the not-too-distant future.

Palmer?

Isn't the Palmer snowfield (nearly) permanent? It looks nearly gone in this photo. Was 2005 the really awful snow year? I was there in August of 1999 and I think you could still ski most of the way to the lodge then on a thin section of snow. (really good snow year)
