On Mount Hood the falling ice concerned me much more than falling snow. The snow pack was pretty much as solid as it gets. On Mount Whitney and Wheeler there was no avalanche danger at all.
Thanks Mountain Girl! Winter is my favorite time of the year, so that's why it made me very pleased to be at the major mountains during this time. With great conditions too!
Thanks Noondueler. There are many opportunities here in the West coast. The only problem is the weather which during the summer should be pretty decent (I hope).
Hi Josh, first of all let me say tht this was a great reading.
I'm climbing Mt. Whitney on March 30th and I just relized that they lock the road to the TH. Problem is that I only have one day available and the extra hike doesn't help.
I see you had to deal with that so I'm hoping you could share some advise
1) Do the rangers allow any leaway for driving past the gate to all the way to the trailhead? or is it an absolute no?
2) How long did it take you to hike from the where you parked to the TH?
Any other tips would be greatly appreciated

Gerard - check out this site for Whitney Portal information:
When I was there it was "enter at your own risk". We could have parked at the trailhead, but we did not want to risk getting in trouble or get the car stuck if a snow storm did come. There were plenty of rocks on the road at one point. Dropping off gear seemed to be a good idea. It took about 1 hour and 40 minutes to walk the extra distance.
