The Great Escarpment  Sucess!

It was 10 years since I last did this hike, and I had forgotten the tough up-down trail as you head west from the Government Peak trailhead. I did remember the overlooks, which were as glorious as I remembered.

Fleeing from biting flies  Sucess!

After my initially planned long hike was stopped short at Summit Peak because of the blood-drawing flies, I sought a respite on the escarpment above Lake of the Clouds. Maybe a blessing in disguise. Hiking along the escarpment was great! Someday in cooler weather I look forward to exploring the rest of the wonderful Porkies.

Glorious  Sucess!

What a place! A cold front and 30 mph winds cleared the bugs and made the Lake of the Clouds a jewel. And cleared out the flies! Started at Government Peak trail and went west along the Escarpment, then looped east to Government Peak and came back via a spectacular river. 14 miles of smiles.

Rain and Sun  Sucess!

Quoted from my trip journal at samh.net/backpacking:

Mark and Sam took a four day weekend and did a great – albeit rainy – loop within the confines of the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park located on the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Our trip route was as follows: N. Mirror Lake Trail, Little Carp River Trail, Lake Superior Trail and Big Carp River Trail.
