The Carrel Cross below the South Face marks the spot where Jean-Antoine Carrel, the first to conquer the Italian Arete in 1865, died from exhaustion on August 26th 1891.
The Carrel Refuge (3829m) can just be seen on the sky-line at the left edge of the picture, below the Great Tower.
On the right is the Furggen Ridge.
