Stark Beauty

Very nice photo, Devil's Tower really sparks interest - how in the world was that thing formed?!

Re: Stark Beauty

Devils Tower is all that is left of a volcano that almost erupted millions of years ago. The rock itself is a lava insertion that rose to the surface and never went any further. When it did this, the drastic temperature differential cooled the lava, turned it to stone and caused the cracks and prominent columns we see today. Over the years, the huge mountain/volcano gave way to erosion and the hearty core remained in tact - hence Devils Tower!. (I only know this because I just got back from my trip and read about it while there.)

Re: Stark Beauty

That's just crazy talk. It's really the remnants of the world's tallest tree stump that was petrified long ago when giants walked the earth. A huge cat scratched the sides and that is why it is scarred like that.

There. Now doesn't that make much more sense than your silly volcano and erosion story? ;- )
