Thanks Anya...how common? Really caught my attention. Edible? We bought some cacti at Wholefoods before we returned home....we always enjoy it in restaurants, rarely get a chance to fix it at home. Cheers.

They are pretty common. Their fruits are edible and sweet, but I never tried. I leave them for wildlife and just stick to the strawberries ;) Cheers.

You are right Bazz, it is well protected, longer and stonger than most it appeared. They all hurt, I speak from experience. Cheers.

Ha, ha, I'm so used to having cactus spines in my body after hiking in the desert that sometimes I don't find individual spines until a few days later. But one day I tripped below Moapa Peak, fell full force and "impaled" one of my hands into a red barrel cactus. That was something else! It took a few days before I could move my fingers again.
