I have climbed Split once with Jack McBroom. Have driven to the trailhead four times, once the way you did, up the VERY rocky road next to the fence. IMO, the best way to the trailhead is off the highway up to the Palisade area, a few miles out of Big Pine, maybe a tad longer but faster and easier on you and you car/truck.
