Finally...
…got to the top after living close to the peak for almost 6 years. A quick dash to the actual highpoint. We didn't stay long and just to a picture of the benchmark.

South Mountain
Should be a mandatory visit for anyone unfortunate enough to be stuck in the Phoenix area.
Up the Holbert Trail from the massive parking lot to the Dobbins Lookout in fifty six minutes. Starting temperature at the TH was 101!

Ran up with Brit
Ran up telegraph with my wife and then grabbed the ridge less than a half mile later to the SE side of the fence. Followed the fence to near the summit and then climbed under the fence to be able to stand on top of the highpoint. Ran down the North Ridge and over to Dobbins lookout and then back to telegraph pass and back down to the car on the south side. Fun 90 minutes!
Never saw a car on the road the whole time we were up there!

Hiked Holbert Trail
Today was a "Silent Sunday" so I parked low and hiked the Holbert Trail to its end at the upper paved road, then walked to the Gila Lookout (where the road ends), about 4 miles each way. Also explored the National Trail and walked the perimeter fencing, but chose to stay legal today, so I got as high as about 2,680 feet. I have hiked and explored the South Mountains innumerable times in my 20+ years here. The petroglyphs are cool, too, a nice reminder that back in the olden days, this was a remote and sacred peak to the local indians.

South Mountain Antennaes-Mount Suppoa
Have been wanting to do this everytime I have flown into Sky Harbor into Phoenix. My 18 yr old grandson and I did this via Telegraph Pass and then upwards from the National Trail. Encountered a few expert but crazy mountain bikers. We went off trail to get as close as we could to the antennaes. Made my day!
We returned to go all the way to the top today. We made it as high as you are allowed to hike, to the fence line of the radio towers... good hike, great view of the Laveen area and the Estrella Mountains.

South Mountain
This was my first hike in the Phoenix Area, and what a view of the skyline.
Tried to do this one after work (in Phoenix on business) and wound up doing the lower section in the dark. Did not have a flashlight, so I downloaded the flashlight ap to my iPhone.

Spectacular Views!!!
I have been to Phoenix many times and I always neglected to go to South Mountain. Never more! I went up as far as I was allowed to go. The views from the various lookouts were spectacular, easily the best views I have ever seen from one area of Phoenix and its vicinity. There are MANY great trails to explore. Highly recommended!!!
