Thank you for the good vote!

In addition to being close to home (~3 hrs. from Portland), Smith has also been a consistent "oasis" of good, dry weather this winter season (this is not necessarily the norm). It is amazing that even though we have rain/snow all around the area (past few weekends) Smith has been dry! We're definitely not complaining. Marsupials are a cool place - you can find (1) solitude (2) 4-star quality easy & moderate multi-pitch routes (as well as many routes in the 5.10 - 5.11 range) and (3) the views are outstanding!

Excellent page as usual. Now I am going to have to go do these on a weekend soon! Let me know if you are heading out there anytime soon.

Thanks for the vote Brian!

You've been staying away from SP for a few days I think (work issues)?

Actually been talking to Mark about getting together at Smith the weekend after this one (3/29-3/30) - maybe we could all go and do some stuff there?

The Marsupials are pretty cool - lots of new stuff not in Watts' book (some of it in Lawson's booklet). Talk to you later.

Yep, lots of work these days. I generally get in once a day though to SP. If I don't do St. Helens this weekend with Craig Irwin and his son (from SP), I'm headed to Smith with Mark and Natasha. Not sure about 3/29-30. I may have to work that Saturday but could meet you there on Sunday.

We'll see. Take care.

(So, are you going to put up the Smith Rock Group now since you did "Wherever I May Roam"?)

What's up with that work on weekends deal Brian? sorry to hear about that! Unfortunately we can't make it to Smith this weekend - got this rock course starting its first weekend session. Oh well - we DID sign up for it I guess.

....was thinking about that (Smith Rock Group). Actually have it written up just haven't had time to post it (my connection at home is VERY slow so the photos take forever - it'll take me 2hrs). Had some hesistation about it though (mainly because Wherever I May Roam is a bolted route - but in my mind many of the better routes at smith are bolted since they're face climbs). I guess I'll give it a shot - if people don't like it, I'll take it down. Though there are some really cool trad routes on that formation as well (Sky Ridge & Sky Chimney come to mind). Also I found very little out there about any of these 3 routes - another reason some might appreciate it. My personal opinion is that I enjoy variety on SP (from short hike-type mtns. and crag climbs to multi-day, backcountry climbs) - not sure how many share that opinion. Haven't heard any objections (yet) regarding Monkey or Marsupials. I kind of look at as something you can do when you cannot climb "real" mountains (whatever "real" means).

I think you should definitely put up Smith Rock Group. There are some stunning routes there. I think you could even put up the big main mass there too as there are trails to the top (Misery Ridge) and several trad routes to the top (Cinnamon Slab, Super Slab, etc etc) and bolted routes, etc. Only problem would be in figuring out its name. No one I have talked to knows a common name for the main mass there between Monkey Face, Smith Group, Crooked River and the main entrance. Do you?

Thanks Brian. Just finished posting Smith Rock Group.

...I was thinking about adding the 'main' island of Smith. I think though that there are so many routes on it that it might make sense to break this one up into walls (technically Monkey would've been part of this formation but I already included it as a separate formation), ex. the Red Wall, the Picnic Lunch Wall, the Kiss of the Leppers Wall, The Christian Brothers, Shiprock etc etc.. Among other things, this avoids the nomenclature issues.

What do you think?

Not sure. On one hand, it would follow along the lines of some of the other submissions on SP as in particular rock walls but on the other hand, the main island seems to be closer to more of a real mountain which would fit into the main idea of SP. (although isn't Smith Rock just a really the eroded south ridge of Gray Butte anyway so maybe that's not a good arguement to keep it all as one mountain submission) Not sure. Either way is fine though and you have a point as things would get pretty confusing if not listed separately. I wouldn't think short single pitch sport climbs should be listed as routes but multipitch ones and even Misery Ridge could be added as summit routes.

Either way is good though. I've got plenty of pictures to submit whenever you put something up though! ;- ) Good luck. You are the Keeper of Smith Rock on SP now! Use your power for good, not evil. :- D

....so I've been trying to figure out if I've met "peakbagger4" before :) ? I read the trip report of your Cruiser climb (think we were there a week or two after you - the ranger at FJ lakes mentioned the accident) and it sounds like we both might be part of the Mazamas??

The trip report was just a link I found and thought it would be of interest. We have met many times, climbed together, camped together, drank beer together, and are both part of the Mazamas. I thought I would raise an eyebrow when I asked how Shirley was doing but then later I found that anyone who had been to your pages would know your wife's name. Anyway peakbagger4 is just a screen name I was going to get in touch with you in the near future to see what your fall climbing plans were via regular e-mail. I am climbing Beacon Rock (weather permiting) with Monty Friday and my wife & I are climbing Rooster with Monty & Margaret Saturday. I have 3 Finger Jack the last weekend in Sep but the 20-21 weekend may be open. October/Nov look pretty free except I plan to help out ICS and OCT 11-12 I may help out the AYM with the rock climbing. There is a climb up Mt Adams via Adams Glacier that sounds fun, but I have kind of said I would help out AYM (however not offically commited yet). If you get the urge to go climbing some nice sunny weekday (Beacon, Broughton, Rocky Butte) and can afford a sick day give me a call. Or with the weather turning a Smith Weekend may be nice. I will respond much quicker to regular e-mail or phone. I just now found this message part of summit post and do not plan to check it that often. I have used this venue to get beta often, but actually doing a page is all new. I am not sure how public this forum is so I am assuming you still have my phone & e-mail. If not I can send it via your e-mail or you can get it from the mazama directory. Hope to get together soon tell Shirley I said hi.

Take Care,

Jay

Thank you for the good vote, Dean.

It's a pretty fun place - not very popular compared to other parts of Smith and when the mountains are getting "pounded" by snow, there's usually some chance of catching a ray of sunshine there.
