Took about ninety five minutes to get to Signal Knob. Went to Meneka Peak next.

Trees and leaves and breezes...
Hiked up here on a mid-autumn Saturday (maybe a week before peak fall colors?) and almost had the trail to myself. Most folks I saw appeared to be day-hiking it, but I spent the night at the campsite just below the Buzzard Rock overlook (I tried pitching my tent beside the fire circle at the overlook itself, but the wind coming through the gap threatened to blow it down, so I had to scoot out of the wind). The view from the Knob was great. :)

Warm February Loop
Lots of hikers made it out to Signal Knob to enjoy this unseasonably warm February day (high 60s degrees [F]). Completed the counter clockwise loop at a leisurely pace, enjoyed a PB&J and granny smith apple at Signal Knob Lookout.

Knobbery
I concocted a hike where I climbed Richardson Knob first (via bushwhack), then Signal Knob, then Meneka Peak, then Peak 1881 (via bushwhack).
I had originally planned to drive up Forest Road 66 in Little Fort Valley, park, and hike to Signal Knob and Meneka Peak. I knew that March 20th was after the third Monday of March when the dirt roads were supposed to reopen. Much to my chagrin, I realized that I had been looking at the 2010 calendar. So, I hiked up to Big Schloss instead and came back on April 2nd.
I made rapid progress over the first three miles, and then somewhat more slowly over the last mile to Signal Knob. I took in the views of Strasburg After eating lunch on the summit of Meneka, I headed down the Tuscarora Trail back to FR 66. I saw a few hikers shortly after the summit, but I was all by myself on FR 66 both to and from the car.

For Credit
Crossed on a class backpacking trip for PE credit at Northern Virginia Community College.
Made it to Signal Knob in just under 2 hours, set up camp at the 2nd campsite to the end of Signal Knob. Surprised not to see another soul until 9AM the next morning. Beautiful hike up the ridge with great views of Buzzard Rocks. Definitely will return when the trees don't block most of the view from Signal Knob.

One of my favorites
This hike is great. Did it in about 4.5 hours with minimal stops. Didn't see a single person on the way up but many on the way down. Next time I will camp and spend some more time up there.

Hiked this one from Elizabeth Furnace
A great overall hike. We did the 10.5 mile loop in about 5 hours. The ice/snow wasn't bad but there was enough to make things look nice. Added bonus, we only saw three other people on the trail.
I've usually done it in the loop from Elizabeth Furnace; a great hike. Much better that doing it from the Powell's Fort/Little Passage Creek trailhead.

I like to mountain bike in the GW forest, and twice I have taken my bike to the top of Signal Knob (it requires some carrying). I visit did it the summer of 1999, and again in summer 2002.
