Overview

View towards Passo Grostè and the central Brenta

The "Via attrezata Gustavo Vidi" is one of the three ferrate of the northern Brenta chain. It is a relatively easy trail - there are only several actual climbing patches - a perfect ferrata for beginners. Most of the trail is a great hike along one of the ledges below Pietra Grande (2937m) and Cima Vagliana (2862). Like all the trails in the northern Brenta chain this sentiero is much less crowded than the trails in the central Brenta so that you actually can spend quite lonely days on it.

The actual ending poind of this ferrata is the intersection with Sentiero Claudio Constanzi which most of the climbers follow towards Bocchetta dei Tre Sassi. It can be combined with the easier part of the Palete-trail to do a circle around Pietra Grande and end at Passo Grostè again.

First Stage: Passo Grostè - Pietra Grande South Ridge

From the cable car station at Passo Grostè turn northwestwardswards to the real Passo. There take the trail (390) that leads along the eastern side of Pietra Grande. After some flat sections the trail begins to steeply climb into a pass on the Pietra Grande ridge.

Here the ferrata starts (sign that you should secure yourself) and heads east around a corner on a narrow ledge. It then climbs onto the ridge again to reach a viewpoint from which you have a great vista towards Cima Grostè and the central Brenta peaks. Now follow the ledge and climb the first (and hardest) climbing section towards the highpoint of the ferrata.

Second Stage: Along the Western Ledge of Pietra Grande

From the highest point of Sentiero Vidi cross to the western side of Pietra Grande. The trail descends and then - for the most part of the next 2 hours follows a wide ledge above the lower western walls of Pietra Grande. Here quite a lot of easy climbing sections follow - all oof which are perfectly secured with cables and ladders. Enjoy the rock formations - towers - spires - needles - along the way.

After the last climbing patch you reach an intersection with Sentiero Constanzi (mark 336). Here you can return to Passo Grostè using this lower trail or head onwards along the ledges below Cima Vagliana. The trail turns into an easy hike. Only when you reach Val Gelada di Campiglio and climb upwards to the Bochetta dei Trei Sassi it gets a little more difficult.

From the Bochetta you can either head onwards on Sentiero Costanzi towards Sasso Alto or climb down Val delle Giare (mark 334) towards Sentiero delle Palete (306) and return to Passo Grostè.

Essential Gear

I would recommend a ferrata set: harness, short ropes and biners. For experienced climbers it is not really neccessary since the ferrata is rather easy and not very exposed.
