Overview

Sassopiatto is a mountain situated in one of the best Dolomites part. During the summer around this region there are many people that practice hiking and especially that attempt to lead the Sassopiatto peak. So if you decide to go up this mountain in August you will not be alone in your adventure. The normal route is very easy until the peak, and you don't need the equipment.

Paul Grohmann, F. Innerhofer e P. Salcher climbed many peaks of Sassopiatto - Sassolungo Group in 1869.

The main peaks are Sassolungo (M. 3179), Sassopiatto (M. 2964), Cinque Dita (M. 2998), Punta Grohmann (M. 3179) and Innerkofler tower (M. 3081). Among these, only Sassopiatto peak are reaching by walking, while the others are reaching exclusevely by skill climbers.

Getting There

The Val di Fassa connects with the Val Gardena along the SS 242 main road, which in 12 km takes you from Canazei to the pass, set on a grassy ridge which separates the Sassolungo group from the Sella group. It is overlooked by the splendid Torri del Sella and by the barrier of the Mesules, but what actually defines the view of Sella is the Sassolungo group of mountains which reach 3181 m. In winter and in summer the area around the Sella Pass offers various access routes to the main hubs for skiing and tours of every level and difficulty.

From "Sella mountain pass" (where it's possible to arrive by car) on a easy path at the left of the telpherage to refuge Friedrich August. Then, you continue the trip to ref. Sandro Pertini and to ref. Sassopiatto (Plattkofelhutte - 2 hours). When you have reached this refuge, turn right and begin to climb the mountain. (1 hour and half from ref. Sassopiatto, 3 hours and half from Sella mountain pass).
To come back to the Sella pass, is a nice trip from ref. Sassopiatto to continue and to do all the tour of the mountain, leading the refuge Vicenza and then ref. Demetz (from refuge Sassopiatto 5 hours), where it's possible to reach the pass by telpherage. Is a long trip, and be carefull because at 4:30 p.m. the telepherage close!

Red Tape

There is a free parking Area on the Sella mountain pass. No permit is required.

The best season to climb Sassopiatto is between June and Semptember. In this period you don't need the equipment. In the other periods are necessary the crampons. During the month of August the region is very busy!
Sassopiatto is the only Dolomiti summit that can be reached (till the summit) with ski.

To be done ONLY with safe snow condition.
Here, many years ago, died the famous Toni Gobbi, the most famous ski-mountaneering specialist of the 50-60's.

Sassollungo - Sassopiatto Tour

This is a long walk, and is usually divided into two distinct walks (the Sas Piat circular walk and the Saslench circular walk), but as there are no great climbs involved they can, in fact, be combined to make a really exciting day's hiking. You must, however, be certain of good weather before setting off.

The starting point is the Rodela pass, which can be reached via the Ciampedèl (Campitello) cable-car and then a 15-minute walk (add to total time) down the north face of the Col Rodela mountain.

Otherwise you can take the car to the Rifugio Passo Sella (2,180 m), and then walk along the dirt road marked path no. 557/4 southwards to the Sela Rodela (Rodela pass) (40 mins to add to total time).

Set off on path no. 557/4 which is mainly flat. You will come to the Rifugio Friedrich August at 2,298 m, the Rifugio Pertini at 2,300 m, and then the Rifugio Sasso Piatto at 2,301 m (2 hrs). Next you go downhill to the fork where path no. 527 begins.

Take the right-hand path to stay at the same altitude as far as the Piz de Uridl and then go down into the western catchment basin of the Saslench. There is now a climb towards to the Rifugio Vicenza (2,253 m) (1 hour 30; 3 hrs 30), but half way up you cross to the other side of the gully and take path no. 526.

You will come to an area of crumbly red rock and then you reach the grassy saddle of Piz Ciaulonch. Go on through the labyrinth of rocks and then you will reach a small pond. Go up the slope and you will suddenly sight the Rifugio Comici at 2,153 m (1 hour 30; 5 hrs). The next path is no. 526/528, a wide easy track which will take you through the meadows and past the woods and finally through the Città dei Sassi (City of Stones). You will come out at the Rifugio Passo Sella at 2,180 m (1 hour; 6 hrs).

If you took the cable-car to reach Col Rodela you can complete the circle by taking the path which leaves the main road 300 m uphill from the Rifugio Passo Sella and in about 1 hour you will get to the cable-car station.
