The 12,000' el. is the latest reading from RJ Secor's High Sierra guide book which is the best source I know of. I'm pretty sure the PeakStats el. is off. I've noticed a lot of off els. on other sites like MountainZone.
And yes you can do the Shep crest from Excelsior. Bob Burd did a North Peak, Shep Crest Excelsior outing. The trip report is in the this climbers log.
The difference in elevation is simply due to how you report the visible contour lines. Secor uses 12,000 ft, which is the highest contour on the map, perfectly valid.
Lists of John uses the mean of the highest contour and what would be the next one, so 12,020 on a 40 ft contour interval. Also valid.
Secor always lists 2 elevations. The oldest and the newest. In this case the old one was 12,015 and the new one is 12,000' as of the second edition. Maybe Bob was stoned that day and thought he was 20 ft higher!
Just kidding Bob.

Re: Nice PageThanks Woodzy. I've been peak bagging in the Sierra for 15 years with over 150 ascents and I always carry a camera!

CorrectionsThe peak is 12,220' according to this page: http://www.listsofjohn.com/PeakStats/Climbers.php?Id=32731
On Google Earth, it is about 12,020 feet.
Also, can't this peak be done from Excelsior? It looks like a pretty simple climb.

Bob Burd says 12,020The listsofjohn site is from mountains hiked by Bob Burd. I think you can cite 12,020 from that source.
