Overview

Serrella massif. 2004.01.25Barranco de la Canal

The Serrella massif is one of the biggest and higher massif in Alicante, in fact, its surface is about 8.000Ha and its average altitude is higher than 1.000m. It has a shape slightly bandy and its orientation is East – West , separating the Marina Baixa district in the south, and Marina Alta & El Comtat districts in the north. In its slopes we find the next villages; Benassau, Confrides, Beniardà, Castell de Castells, Famorca, Facheca and Quatretondeta. The maximum elevations are El Plà de la Casa peak (1379m/4524ft), Mallà del Llop (1361m/4465ft), Serrella (1359m/4459ft), L’Heura (1359m/4459ft) and Pico Serrella (1319m/4327ft). Maybe the most beautiful peak is Plà de la Casa; Is the highest peak, has a snow-well under the summit, it’s necessary to make a simple climbing to get to the top,… To the right of the Mallà del Llop, we find “El Barranco de la Canal” (photo), a fantastic gully used to reach the summit from the Guadalest dam (Castell de Guadalest). This massif is completed to the right by the Sierra d’Aixortà with its maximum height, “El Cerro de los Parados” (1220m), but that is another history.

The Serrella Trail

It’s possible to cross the massif from Guadalest dam or Castell de Castells to Benasau. This route is quite hard, due the 27Km we have to walk, and the slope (+ 1700m / - 1200m). Despite that is a beautiful and interesting route. Very recommendable.

The Guadalest Dam

The construction of this dam started during February/March, 1953 and finished in August, 1966. 70 workers and 166 millions of pesetas were necessary to store the valued water from the Guadalest river to supply the nearby villages.

It’s a gravity dam with 74m high and 236m long on top. It has an area of about 86Ha where stores until 16 cubic hectometers.

Weather

The weather is typically Mediterranean-continental. Precipitations are abundant, especially in autumn. In winter, the snowfall and frost are regular. In summer, the sun and the high temperatures dominates almost all the days.

If you need a prediction to 5 days, you can see this website

Climbing areas

There is an easy climbing area in Castell de Guadalest, near the dam.
The routes are divided like that:
- From IV to V+ : 18 routes
- From 6a to 6c+ : 46 routes

Camping

Around the Serrella massif, there are several camp sites in different villages. I’ll try to annotate all of them:

Callosa d’En Sarrià

- Fuentes del Algar: This camp site is close to the well known Algar waterfalls. We can enjoy the following services: Picnic area, bathrooms with domestic water and showers. We can find this area, in the CV-715 between Callosa d’En Sarrià and Bolulla.
More info: 965972129 (Algar waterfalls).

Castell de Castells

- El Castellet: This is probably the most interesting camp site to enjoy the Sierra Serrella, in fact, it’s a starting point for many routes (PR-V-149 “Castellet”, PR-V-150 “Morro Blau” & PR-V-151 “Els Arcs”)
In the camp site there is enough room for 100 places and it has picnic area, lightning, fountains, bathrooms with domestic hot water, bar and playground equipment.
Anyway there are 5 cabins (3x4 places, 1x8 places and 1x20 places) with different equipment. The services are the same aforementioned.
