Scary. Crevasses and...

Scary. Crevasses and caveties created by melt-off underneath the sand. The only way to detect them, was from the sound of your footsteps. When it started to sound hollow, you better watched out. This photo from a place where a little creek came straight out of a sand dune area.

Interesting

I've come across crevasses and mud before but not this - presumably this is because of the very dry conditions. I wonder how did the ice form in the first place - has it been snowier in the past?

I must admit I'm quite ignorant about the area's past, so I can't answer the question if it has been colder or snowier earlier on.
In some places there were meters of sand on top of the ice/glaciers/crevasses.
