Rucu Pichincha from East...

Rucu Pichincha from East Quito. The summit (center pyramid) is a vertical mile above the city and makes for a solid training hike if done from the base of the mountain in Quito. The ridges on either side of the valley are both good approach routes. The southern route (left) is easier, while the northern route is more interesting. Both routes are very dangerous for anyone who looks like a good robbery victim (i.e. expensive gear and/or of caucasian appearance). The northern route is probably a bit less dangerous in that respect because it begins in an upper-class neighborhood and crosses through privately owned timber property. The cliffs seen to the right of the summit pyramid are called Condor Rumi, and are skirted on the northern approach.
