The Sylvenstein reservoir in the border area between Germany and Austria offers various routes for beginners and advantaged ice climbers.
The waterfalls are a little bit hard to find and are hidden in the woods around the lake.

Getting There

Coming from Bad T�lz (Germany), via Lenggries you reach the Sylvenstein reservoir.
Take the road to the left, signed B 307 in direction to Achensee and follow for a few kilometres, the reservoir on your right side.
You cross a bridge and reach Austria, directly behind the bridge is a small park range on the right side.
From this park range follow the footsteps towards the wood for about 1,5 kilometers and turn left , entering a small valley to the lower basin, ascending a few meters you reach the upper basin.

For the way from the park range to the valley it might be useful to have snowshoes, especially when you have a lot of snow in the winter

Route Description

The waterfalls are located in two basins, you can see the upper basin enroute.

The first basin offers different routes of WI 4 all about 25 meters height.

The upper basin offers several routes from WI 2 to WI 3, also about 25 meters height.

There are a lot of drilled hooks for using top ropes and some slings to rappel.

The best time for climbing is during the week, at weekend a lot of climbers are there and it�s a popular training area for ice classes

Essential Gear

All you need for ice climbing:
ice tools,
crampons,
harness,
two 60 meter half ropes or a single rope for top rope,
helmet and of course some ice screws.
