Approach

They are several ways to approach this climb, here is the option from the Miesel valley (Mieseltal).

Get to Schneebergdorfl, and keep going towards the Schratten valley (Schrattental), and before this valley and find the juntion for the road along the Miesetal. Follow this one until the first juntion, where ther are signs for the red path for the Obere and Untere Herminnensteig and the yellow path towards the Adolf Kögler Hut, and a road. From here you just have to follow that red path. As of 2005, it was well marked.

Route Description

As said, basically you follow the red path to the Waxriegel.

The first part is the Untere Herminensteig. The path goes through the forest looking to get into a wide snow and ruble gully, and on it, eventually, the path will reach a rock step or funnel where there are two options, one to go left and bypass this step or to climb this step (rock 5.2, UIAA 1) and get over it. The step is not hard but it is akward when is icy or snowy, so be careful.

The path then will go right inside the forest and the up and eventually left to the top of the gully again, and will join the Nordgrafensteig. This one will take you to the Adolf Kögler Hut. Take the path going north, that is, right, and follow it until yoiu find the begining of the second part, the Obere Herminensteig. Here you go up directly, following always the red marks and soon getting into a pleasent rock gully which represents a sustain scramble. The path drops you in the big plateau, and from it you can go left to the Zahnradbahn high station or right towars the Klosteralpen/real summit. Also from it you can see the big cross of the Waxriegel (1888 m)

Essential Gear

Good shoes, good weather protection (wind, rain). If done in winter or if there is snow on the route, is better to have crampons with you. If you get scare in easy climbs or in doubt bring a 30 meters rope for help on the steps and the scrambles, but this is not necessary.
